Salvation ArmyWednesday, 23 July 2003 Salvation Army -Ken was conscripted into the National Service in July 1969 and spent 2 years in the Australian Army. Throughout this time wherever soldiers were stationed in Australia the Salvation Army was always there to offer soldiers a free hot cuppa and often a free donut or a biscuit - this was often at great difficulty, and with effort by the salvation army staff - and mostly when you were really hanging out for something as you had not eaten or had a break for quite a while. They gave freely of their time, resources and services - and always with a friendly smile. In early 1990's Ken was approached to provide a consultancy to the Salvos with a range of marketing and promotional aspects including the corporate RedShield appeal. After some very successful fundraising events Ken declined to accept the consultancy funds seeking instead a symbolic "cuppa tea and a donut". To see the effect the Salvos give to help turn peoples lives around is amazing. I openly wept when I heard a young man named "John" tell his life story to a corporate gathering and how the salvation army helped turn his life around - from the depths of despair and near suicide (from living on the streets, heavy drug addition, male prostitution, theft, etc) to a productive life with a job, a girlfriend, regained self respect and a direction in life. Such things really do make you understand the saying "Thank God for the Salvos". |
